Barcelona beaches – The ultimate guide

31 May, 2014

Whether you want to daydream about the perfect day at the beach or do some planning for your Barcelona holiday – this article will help you to learn more about several options Barcelona has to offer!

It´s no secret beaches in the Barceloneta area are very crowded – it is due to their central location only 15 minutes walk from the historical center. Want to escape the bustling beach life? Don´t worry – to have a fun and relaxed day at the beach does not necessarily mean that you have to leave the city and head to the beaches at the Costa Brava (which are defenitely worth a visit, but that´s another story ;)). Here we share with you some of the many options for the best beach experiences in town, something for all beach-types – looking for action, gourmet food or cristal clear water!

Party at Bogatell beach
This long beach is located about 15 minutes walking distance from “Bogatell” metro station and much calmer and cleaner than the Barceloneta beach. There are two chiringuitos with an Ibiza style chill-lounge atmosphere , attracting the beautiful party crowd. This is the place to see and be seen whilst sipping a cocktail and soaking in the relaxed beach life.

Gastronomic Chiringuito La Guingueta
The word “Chringuito” originates from South America and stands for an open air beach bar. You will find many of those popular bars serving cold drinks and little snacks along  the beaches – but none like “La Guingueta”. At La Guingueta (Barceloneta beach or Bogatell beach) you can not only enjoy the sunshine and the sea view, but eat in one of the best Chiringuitos of the world. Here, the food served are gastronomic tapas and typical dishes, created by Carles Abellan, one of Spains best chefs who owns also the famous Comerc 24 restaurant amongst others.

Wakeboard & Paddle Surf at Malamar
If you are missing the action or get bored of sunbathing or drinks in Chiringuitos – the Malamar wakepark in Montgat (train stop) might just be your thing. Offering facilities with a restaurant and area for beach sports as well as rental of equipment & classes for wakeboard, wakeskate & paddle surf.

Salt beach club Hotel W
The 5* luxury Hotel W opened the Salt beachclub right next to the sea with a restaurant &  lounge terrace. Including a private beach club area and a separate zone for private parties and events…Salt beachclub for the most exlusive beach experience!

Port Olympic restaurants and nightclubs
Around the area of the “Passeig de Maritim del Port Olympic” you’ll find some of Barcelona’s most popular beach venues – being upmarket restaurants and beach bar by day and chic nightclubs after sunset. Carpe Diem Lounge Club, Shoko and Opium Mar are located on the beachfront.

Escape the crowd
For a quiet, pure beach day with cristall clear water and no frills you can take the train from Plaza Catalunya and head north. Get off after 20 minutes at “Ocata” beach – a very wide sandy beach with a great, simple chiringuito..or stay on the train until “Sant Pol the Mar” – a cute little village 1 h away with various little beaches and traditional Chiringuitos serving great seafood. The beautiful and atmospheric beaches at Sant Pol are especially popular on Sundays, so if you get the chance to go there under the week you should take it!
