traditional

Although the capital of Catalan and a major city in Spain, Barcelona is still a village at heart and retains a strong sense of community. Even just on a short visit to the city you’ll catch a glimpse of its traditions and customs going on in the streets, and annual festivals and fiestas taking place all over the area. Head to the cathedral on a Sunday and you’re likely to see the locals performing the Sardana, a traditional Catalan dance. Catalonia is also renown for its castells which are extremely high towers made up of people - competition to see who can make the highest is fierce. You can still find a Barcelona apartment with an old-fashioned elegance amongst the narrow winding streets of the older quarter located right in the centre of all the activities and entertainment. Other traditional festivals that are fun to join in are Saint George’s Day, the patron saint of Catalonia, celebrated by giving out roses and books to loved ones, whilst the Eve of Saint John's features bonfires, firecrackers and fireworks and La Mercè festival is held in honour of Barcelona's patron saint, watch out for the fire-breathing dragons and the pyrotechnical music show at the Montjuïc fountains. One particularly pleasant tradition if you just want to relax is to simply sit at a terrace café sipping a cool drink and watching the world pass by.
