City Guide: La Barceloneta

Let’s go to the playa by tube?
Barcelona: 4km of beaches, 10 min away from the centre & 272 sunny days a year. Get tanned on the beach, dive into the waves, surf, windsurf and kitesurf. Go jogging, roller-skating or cycling on the Passeig Maritim or wander in the marina while taking a look at the beautiful yachts and sailing boats.

Wanna sip a Mojito at the Chiringito (a bar on the beach)? Feel like paella or seafood on the seashore? The Barceloneta has an exquisite taste of holidays.

The Barceloneta, built over the sea in the 18th c., once was a village of fishermen, sailors and soldiers. With its standard buildings bloks and washing hanging out of the windows, the area has retained its working class touch.

Passeig Maritim : a stroll along the sea down to the Port Olympic (bars, restaurants, night clubs and casino).

Cable Car : Barcelona from the sky.

San Juan : fiesta on the beach (end of June).

El Raval is a multicultural neighbourhood divided in two parts by the Carrer Hospital.

NORTHERN PART: the most interesting. Popular terraces, cheap (but often delicious) restaurants, and bars next to lounge cafés, alternative boutiques, New
Age book shops, and amazing international exhibition halls.

MACBA : contemporary art museum from the american architect Richard Meier. The MACBA opened to the public on November 28th, 1995

Every year in June, the Sonar festival takes place around the Macba.

Mercat de la Boquería : beautiful covered market. Artistic piles of fruit, vegetables, fish and seafood (closed on Sunday).

La Paloma : a mythical night club from the early 20th c, rococo ball-room. At 11pm, the elderly dancing to the sound of the brass band give way to the DJs and electronic music. (closed)

SOUTHERN PART: Barri Xinès, former red-light district where many famous artists lived, eg. Picasso.
Palau Güell : from Gaudi , you can only visit the first floor of the Güell palace.

Marsella : absinthe bar, genuine decoration & nicotine patina!

El Cangrejo : kitsch transexual show.

Carrer Gran de Gracia : Belle Epoque buildings.

Cinéma Verdi : for cinema lovers.

Parc Güell : close to Gracia, a phantasmagoric park by Gaudi.

The new city: an extension to the north of the city built up at the end of the 19th c. It is the economic, commercial and fashion hub of Barcelona. To see: Gaudi’s main masterpieces.

Passeig de Gràcia : the Champs-Elysées of Barcelona. A wide avenue lined with the most famous modernist buildings: casa Mila, casa Battlo. The best fashion designers, hotels and luxury places.

Vinçon : n°96, decoration & design in an amazing Belle Epoque building.

Rambla Catalunya : extension of the famous Rambla. Restaurants, bars and terraces in the shade of the linden trees. In the nearby streets: trendy cafés, luxury boutiques, art galleries, etc.

Diagonale : a 12km long big avenue that crosses Eixample. All the “chic & not cheap” you could ever dream of: haute couture, jewellers, big hotels… the ultimate place to be.
